CARE National Advocacy Conference

Meg participated in the CARE National Advocacy Conference on June 7 and 8 in Washington DC.

CARE created the 'I Am Powerful' award this year to honor those people who serve to empower others. On the first night of the conference, actress and CARE ambassador Meg Ryan presented the tribute. Ryan praised the honoree, Violeta Chunchu, as 'a real and powerful woman' and embraced her affectionately. Chunchu belongs to the Shuar ethnic group in Ecuador. (...) As CARE staff translated from Spanish, Chunchu gave thanks for the award, and acknowledged the transformation in her life and in her community as a result of CARE's work. 'The work with CARE has changed our community,' said Violeta Chunchu. 'Shuar women have become self-sufficient and I, a woman, was elected leader of my community. Tonight, I am very moved and proud to represent Shuar women, Ecuador and women in general.'

Another Baby? - Meg Ryan adopted a baby girl from China in january, and it looks like she's planning to do it again! At Barneys in LA, on May 27 Meg was overheard discussing her new baby plans and this time it'll be a boy.

Meg buying a mansion on Martha's Vineyard? (Boston Herald)

Well, apparently the place agreed with her, because word is the 'Sleepless in Seattle' star has an agreement to purchase a 12-room estate on North Neck Road designed by famed architect Roderick James. The house, listed for $7 million in 2004, has 5,664 square feet on 6.7 acres.

The six-bedroom, 4 1/2 -bath estate sits high on a cliff overlooking the water. It has post-and-beam construction with "an English oak interior brought from England by barge." Coincidentally - or not - the architect was in charge of the rehab of Windsor Castle!
"It's the kind of place where you would have horses," said Someone Who Knows.

Meg Ryan a secret road rager? (Star Magazine via Sammie's blog)

Does L.A. traffic turn perpetually perky Meg Ryan, 44, into a demon on wheels? A flustered driver tells Star People that he was moving slowly in the right lane while searching for a parking spot along La Cienega Boulevard on May 26 when a car started to honk furiously behind him. Eventually the angry driver pulled up alongside of him, and "the next thing I know, Meg Ryan is telling me move it or else," the stunned driver tells Star People. "She's swearing at me, 'Get out of my way!' I was freaked!" the driver claims.

Warner Independent Pictures has screened In The Land of Women at the Cannes Film Festival, reports Variety. Variety itself has a short review at their site.

A strong cast struggles valiantly to rise above Lifetime material in "In the Land of Women," an appealingly scruffy if overly programmatic drama. Writer-director Jonathan Kasdan's tale about a young man emerging from his relational cocoon rests squarely on the shoulders of its trio of talented lead actors, whose names should draw a limited audience to the Warner Independent PicturesWarner Independent Pictures feature.Played by "The OC's" Adam BrodyAdam Brody in his patented so-dorky-he's-cool fashion, 26-year-old aspiring writer Carter Webb has just been dumped by his supermodel g.f. Sophia (Elena Anaya). Leaving L.A., Carter moves in with his half-deranged grandmother (Olympia Dukakis) in suburban Michigan, where he becomes entangled with beautiful housewife Sarah Hardwicke (Meg RyanMeg Ryan, radiating her trademark charm in a much lower key) and her adolescent daughter Lucy (Kristen Stewart). Pic doesn't provide a clear sense of where it's headed early on, which is why the eventual developments can't help but feel derivative. Dialogue alternates between insightful and twee, yet Kasdan elicits strong performance all around.

There are also some rumors about another possible movieproject: Laurie Horowitz' debut novel "THE FAMILY FORTUNE". The book has already been optioned to International Entertainment Group with Meg apparently signed on for the lead. The novel is a modern remake of Jane Austen's "Persuasion".

On May 16th Meg and pal Laura Dern attended the LA premiere and afterparty for An Inconvenient Truth, a movie by former VP Al Gore. Meg and Laura skipped the red carpet, but didn't escape the photographers when greeting Al Gore at the afterparty.

Looks like a funny Canadian band called The Arrogant Worms can count Meg and friend Carrie Fisher amongst their 'fans'. Last year Meg and Carrie made a little roadtrip in NewFoundland, where they visited a place there called 'Dildo' - no, not kidding here - and sang along to one of the songs of The Arrogant Worms, that has the same name.

Several photoagencies had pictures today of Meg Ryan, son Jack and daughter Daisy on vacation in Cabos San Lucas, Mexico. They are staying there with a group of friends. Some of the pictures show them on a boat (see below), some at the beach (to follow later). Looks like Jack is a fan of surfboarding!

She also talked about recently adopting her new daughter Daisy True... sister to her first child, Jack.
She said: "It was the most magical, miraculous and white-knuckle fearful experience. But now I've got this little love bomb toddling around my house. She's so Jack's sister and so my daughter. She's just heaven." '

We haven't had time yet to scan all the pages of the O-magazine interview and article, but here's one to start with. The rest of the pages will be placed in the Gallery later this week. The interview and article are mainly about Meg's trip to India for the CARE organisation. Oprah did the interview by phone while Meg was in China to adopt Daisy and thus asked her a few questions about that . Meg told Oprah that Daisy was sitting next to her and was 14 months old (that means she's 16 months old now!):

"It's been two year process, but nothing prepares you for the second a little person gets handed to you (....) She's beautiful. Every day I am getting to know her, and she is such a flower. You could never anticipate the sweetness, the smarts, or the amount of love she allready has".

Meg Ryan was a guest on the Al Franken Show (Air America Radio) Monday March 27th. She helped good friend Al Franken with another episode of the Senator Wolfman radio sketches, just like she did in previous years (see picture below). The show was aired live from the Catalina Bar&Grill in Los Angeles. We'll add an MP3 of the sketch later this week.

There have been several mentions of Meg attending the TED-conference (Technology, Entertainment and Design) 2006 about two weeks ago. You can find more about this conference at their website. Here's one of the sightings:

"This year, one such moment from off stage was recounted by Chris Herot, who found himself sitting on a bench in front of a tank of large fish during the TED gala evening at the Monterey Aquarium where he joined actress Meg Ryan and string theorist Brian Greene as they were deep in conversation around the origins of the universe and the concept of a larger purpose to existence. Also participating was Thomas Stat of the design consulting firm IDEO. "And in a moment that could only have occured at TED, not one but two people brought up what the Dalia Lama had told them about the topic in personal conversations they had had...," he reported." source

Meg was also present for the CAA (Creative Artists Agency) annual pre-oscar party hosted by Bryan Lourd on Friday March 3rd. Dozens of celebrities attended the party, including Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Tom Hanks, Heath Ledger and Sean Penn.

In addition to her newly adopted daughter, Meg has embarked on another mission to mold the "best version of herself." She has begun working with CARE, an international organization that seeks to ease hardships in the poorest places in the world. After a speaking tour with Robert Kennedy Jr., CARE approached Meg about her involvement. "They made a very articulate and unbelievable case about how to eradicate poverty in the Third World," she says. "They believe the biggest step you can take toward doing that is the emancipation of women. And the biggest step towards the emancipation of women is somehow to cultivate community among women." Meg says that following her divorce the strength and support of the women in her own life helped her, and she was eager to see how community worked in the rest of the world. "One of the things about humanitarian work that's so interesting is that you realize how you can see yourself in anyone," Meg says. "You're in these places that you never imagined yourself being in, with people you never imagined yourself being around, and you see the same spark in their faces that you feel in your own or you feel in your children's faces." One of Meg's CARE missions brought her to the Jehangirpuri slum in Delhi, India…one of the poorest places on Earth.
Meg began volunteering with CARE, an organization that works to alleviate the hardships of poverty throughout the developing world. Recently she traveled 8,000 miles to Delhi, India, to find Jehangirpuri—one of the poorest slums anywhere in the world. Though India has the second-largest population of HIV-positive people in the world, discussion of AIDS there is forbidden. In Jehangirpuri, Meg met with a woman who is fighting against ignorance about HIV and AIDS. She met with another woman who brought her along to a support group meeting organized by CARE. There, women discussed whatever was happening in their lives. "All the women in the village go just to talk about themselves or life, their kids, reproductive health, where they can get immunized," Meg says.

After driving for hours in the desert, Meg met with another Indian woman and her family of six. The woman works 10 to 12 hours a day in the nearby salt fields. Her family makes $1.50 a day. Her children go to school in a small, underground mud pit—the only way to keep them cool from the desert sun. Despite these meager conditions, Meg is told that many students walk an hour each way for a chance to learn. Thirty miles away from the salt fields, Meg visits an experimental school, funded by CARE, that was created to empower daughters of salt workers to seek a better life. "We are studying to become someone just like the boys," says one of the students. "We hope that other girls will study like we do, and we want to be an inspiration to them."

Meg says one of her most lasting memories of India is from the women's group. A woman in a red sari suddenly stood and danced, and everyone else in the group began clapping along. "She was so free in this moment and so beautifully expressive," Meg says. "She took her veil off and she leaned in and her face was straining and so full of gratitude and love. And she said, 'I have nothing. I work in the fields every day. I have nothing, but I love this life. There is so much color.'" Meg says she could feel how this woman's openness was a direct result of the freedom of the group. "This idea of female community is so powerful," Meg says. "Women in isolation are divided and conquered, [but] when women are together it is really one of the most powerful things on this planet."

With her iconic roles in When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, Meg Ryan has practically defined the romantic comedy. Two years ago, however, this megastar walked away from the spotlight, leaving millions of fans wondering what had happened. "It was definitely time to take a break and just regroup and see where I was," Meg says. "I've been an actress and famous person since I was 19 years old. I just needed to be with my son and figure out my life and see what I wanted. … I felt like I was very reactive about my life as opposed to being proactive." During her hiatus from Hollywood, Meg has begun working with CARE, an organization that seeks to help people—especially women—living in the poorest countries in the world. Meg says travel and introspection have helped her become a better friend and mother. "I got to know myself. I just feel like more of an adult, more of a woman."

Meg recently adopted a baby girl from China whom she first named Charlotte True. Meg says that she first had the notion to adopt a baby from China a decade ago, "because there are so many girls there who need homes." After waiting until she was sure her son Jack, now 13 years old, would be ready to be a brother, Meg began the adoption process in China. "Then the events just conspired," Meg says. "I thought she was Charlotte and she's just not…she's a Daisy. She's got the most open, beautiful, honest face you'll just ever see."

In 2001, Meg and her husband, actor Dennis Quaid, divorced. The very public end of their marriage was covered exhaustively in the tabloid press because of Meg's reported affair with her then co-star Russell Crowe. Meg says being subjected to such public scrutiny in such a private moment was "heartbreaking," especially because her son with Dennis was so young at the time. "I feel like you can never really win in the way a tabloid tells a story," she says. "It's a very black-and-white, overly simplistic moral universe that certain people's stories are supposed to fit in. … There's no room for gray."

The tabloids cast Meg's relationship with Russell as the cause of her divorce. However, Meg says that there is more to the story. "He wasn't a home wrecker, but he took a lot of heat for that," she says. "He had a lot of grace, frankly, about not talking about things that he knew were going on in my marriage, and I always will be very grateful to him for that." What the tabloids did not focus on, Meg says, was that her marriage to Dennis was "unhealthy" and had been bad for at least five years. "It was never about another man," she says. "My and Dennis's relationship just couldn't sustain." Meg says she now understands that she "probably should have left much earlier." "Maybe that's a female thing, but it's crazy how you have to talk yourself into protecting yourself and allowing yourself to expand," Meg says. "Anaïs Nin has this beautiful quote. 'And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.' "There are times in every woman's life where she does need to get out and expand and do all those things that make her the best version of herself."

According to the Oprah.com website, there will be an interview with Meg Ryan in the next issue of The Oprah Magazine, a.k.a. O Magazine (April issue). It seems Meg has been on a trip to India to visit some charity projects there.. And the magazine also will have a bit more information re:Meg's daughter.

The latest from the world of gossip. Star Magazine has a small blurb in their Star People section about Meg Ryan and her daughter. Guess the people at Star Magazine don't realize that one year olds usually don't require nightfeedings anymore? ;)

And Defamer claims that Meg was seen (scroll down) for a late night diner with Laura Dern and Sheryl Crowe last week near Meg's home in LA.

According to Niel Sean from sky.com Meg is supposedly about to sign a deal for a TV drama and plans a guest slot in the no.1 US show Commander In Chief, which stars Geena Davis and is all about the first US female President.

Many moviesites are reporting that In the Land of Women will open on May 5th 2006, but the official Warner Independent Pictures site reports that the movie will open AUGUST 18th 2006.
The August date does seem more logical than May 5th, if you take into consideration that there are several blockbusters opening around May 5th.

Meg Ryan is a new mom. Months after applying to adopt a child in China, Ryan, 44, flew there recently to bring her baby daughter home to L.A., PEOPLE reports.

No word yet on the age or name of the tot, who will join 13-year-old Jack Henry, Ryan’s son with her ex-husband, actor Dennis Quaid, 51.

"It is a personal family situation that she does not feel inclined to share," says Ryan's rep.

Says David Ptasnik, cofounder of the Seattle-based agency Americans Adopting Orphans, which has helped more than 600 families adopt, primarily from China: "I think it's great. It lets people know that international adoptions are possible and that it's culturally acceptable. It's going to help a lot of kids."

Ptasnik notes that China, with a large number of healthy children and the relative ease in adopting them, is a popular place for U.S. adoptions. While in China, Ryan met with the U.S. consulate.

The adoption is scheduled to take place at an American consulate in China, according to OK! sources.
